Research on the causes of, and treatments for mental disorders such
as depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have been a
popular area in recent years. Research has shown low levels of
omega-3 fatty acids in people with these disorders, which could be an
indicator for a genetic connection to those conditions.
A large body of evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may
improve symptoms of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The
most promising research links omega-3s to improvements in mood,
increased concentration and improved cognition.
Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids may also decrease violent
behavior. A study of 1,133 young adults followed over six years found
those who had limited amounts of omega-3s in their blood were more
likely to engage in violent acts, while those who took supplements
containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid
(DHA) had a lower risk of violent behavior.
