Heavenly Father has given each of us gifts. Not gifts like you get for your
birthday, but SPIRITUAL gifts that you can't always see. Spiritual gifts are
blessings or abilities given by God to His children through the power of the
Holy Ghost. Gifts of the Spirit are given
to bless and benefit those who love the
Lord and seek to keep His
commandments. (See Doctrine and
Covenants 46:9.)
In 1831, William W. Phelps and his
family moved to Kirtland, Ohio. The
prophet Joseph Smith lived there and the
church was growing. Brother Phelps was a newspaper publisher before he
had heard anything about the gospel of Jesus Christ. He had talents and
strengths and skills that Heavenly Father had blessed him with, just like
he's blessed you! In Doctrine and Covenants 55:1–4, Joseph Smith wrote
down revelation that he received about William's talents and what God
wanted him to do. Some of the things God told him about are gifts that ALL
of us can use. Some of the talents and blessings were specific to him. He
told Brother Phelps that he would have the ability to teach others about
repentance, being forgiven for our sins,
and baptism. Those are gifts that we all
can use to bless others, right?
Brother Phelps used his talents to write
26 hymns, including "Praise to the Man"
and "The Spirit of God." He served as
the personal scribe to Joseph Smith and worked with Emma Smith in
revising, organizing, and publishing the first hymnal in 1836.
We know that as you pray and read and learn more about Heavenly
Father and Jesus Christ, and talk to your teachers and parents and other
people who love you, you will begin to learn and know what gifts you have
been given and how you can use them to bless others throughout your life!
Check the box by the gifts you think you might have. (You can also talk to a parent
about what gifts they notice in you.) If one of your gifts isn’t here, add it to the list!
