Neonatal Jaundice is Common
Most newborns develop a little jaundice during the
first week of life, and this is normal.
Jaundice is caused by bilirubin in blood. Bilirubin
is produced when red blood cells are destroyed.
Bilirubin levels normally increase for 4-5 days of
life while elimination systems in the liver are
activated.
